Thanksgiving 2006

We drove to our relative’s place in Elk Grove for our Thanksgiving. Rebecca got to see her aunts and uncle and even played with them. The food was great and we all had a fun time. Unfortunately, we didn’t join the fun on Black Friday for the early bird specials this year.

MBP … again

Ahh yes, the good folks at Apple has shipped me a new MacBook Pro just a week after I returned mine with bulges, dents and what not. I tell you, this one’s a keeper! No bulges, no top plate almost coming off, I’m liking it so far. Other than the bump in speed when running apps, and a slimmer look, my new MBP looks, feels and smells like my old G4, which has now found a new home with Doug. Oh yes, it does have a larget trackpad too, and the two-fingers trick rocks.

After listening to Net@Nite with Leo and Amber she suggested this site called the MobiReady Report, just a simple site to test if your site is ready for the “Mobile Revolution”.

Flickr has just announced its launch of a new feature called “Camera Finder”. Being someone who is looking to upgrade my current Point and Shoot to something with more substance, I find this really useful. You can view statistics of the types of cameras used on the Flickr site, and they even show you photos taken with a particular camera. Awesome job, Flickr!

So you have a car that is iPod ready, what about on a plane? Apple has got that covered! Yesterday it announced a partnership with carriers Air France, Continental, Delta, Emirates, KLM and United, and these airlines will offer iPod connectivity so that travelers can charge their iPods in transit. How cool is that? Now you know its a matter of time before they have it on the other airlines.

Yesterday I noticed some whites on Rebecca’s lower gums, and I know what that is … Toofies! Er. Teeth. hehe. She just recovered from her cold, and now she’s drooling A LOT, almost as much as when she was 5-6 months old. Plus she’s been trying to put stuff into her mouth more often now. Tell-tale signs of teething!

I love Gmail, so this is just icing on the cake. Now you can download a small Gmail app for your mobile phone. It’s fast, quick and neat. Check it out for yourself at http://gmail.com/app.

Ok, I blogged about my new MBP and how it had a “bulge” above the open window. I was willing to let that one slip by, but now I found out that the top case is all WARPED! I’d thought it was my eyes playing tricks on me, because when I opened the box I felt that the keyboard wasn’t laid truly flat, and this morning after taking some pics of the MBP I discovered that a part of the top case, just behind the F10 key, is partially open! ARRRRGH! This is the first time I’ve had problems with a new Mac before, has Apple’s quality control gone out the window???? I’m going down to the Apple Store tonight to see what can be done about it. God I hate such hassles.

MacBook Pro

Yesterday morning my order for a new MacBook Pro arrived and man was I excited. I didn’t get round to open it until late at night. So far, other than a little bulge in the metal just above the open button, which is a cosmetic problem, my MBP seems to work great. I’m not sure if I want to go through the hassle of getting the “bulge” fixed since I read that it might involve removing the whole bottom cover.

Now to find a copy of Windows XP.

Rebecca’s ninth month has been very interesting. She started the month by being more vocal. Gone are the days of just ehhh, ehhhh. Now its Ma Ma Ma, Da Da Da, pfth fpth lalalala - sometimes she can go on for 15 minutes! She screams really loud too, if she gets really excited. I love it when she expresses herself like that, but in public, I don’t think the people around us appreciate this ruckus!

On to motor skills. She’s been trying to perfect her crawl for the longest time, and this month she’s made quite a bit of headway in that. She’s succeeded in putting her butt up, looking straight, front arms straightened, but just can’t get to moving her arms forward. So she usually ends up “hopping and plopping”. We’ve tried to get her to get used to standing while holding on to something for support, and she now loves to do that. She gets excited and started jumping on the spot.

Now one to behavior. Oh where do I start! Just last week I was thinking that she was sleeping too much during the day, and now I have to eat my owns words. Two days ago she started to refuse naptime, and would start crying when I leave her room. She’s gotten really clingy, and she must have realized the power to crying to get what she wants, coz she’s using that really well!

We’ve also made some changes in our travel arsenal. We don’t use the baby carrier anymore, coz I think she might have outgrown it and she doesn’t get the most out of the experience strapped to my chest. We are using the stroller a little more, and now I’m thinking of getting a more lightweight one so its not always a huffin’ and puffin’ when we take it out or put it back into the car. We also started bringing her booster seat everytime we anticipate eating out at a restaurant, so she gets her very own seat. For some unknown reason she gets so excited when she sits in that booster seat, which then ends up in a mixture of screaming, singing, and blabbering at the restaurant. Well, its a thousand times better than crying I’ll tell you that!

This conference has been done and done, but I’ve only just recently discovered it last week while searching for web development podcasts on iTunes. It’s a collection of recordings that took place during the conference, and speakers included great peeps in the web industry like Andy Budd, Eric Meyer, and Jared Spool. Highly inspirational sessions to listen to for a web developer like me. For those who are interested, visit Webmaster Jam Session Conference.

Privacy Settings on Facebook

I’m pretty happy that Facebook has now opened its doors to everyone, that means I can join. hehe. I never did understand MySpace - its such a jungle out there, with unporportional images, embeds everywhere, and just plain messiness. I guess I’m too old for chaos. I like order, and Facebook is just it. The interface is neat, navigation is easy to understand, and functionality rocks. I heard about the mini-feed privacy issues, and now I understand what they were talking about. No biggie, you can always set your privacy tolerance by accessing the “My Privacy” tab on the left navigation. Whew!

Now to recruit all my friends on Facebook!

Alexander's Steakhouse
Alexander's Steakhouse

Last Friday was Doug’s birthday, so we went to a swanky steakhouse in Cupertino called Alexander’s Steakhouse. It had good reviews on Yelp, so we were pretty confident it wouldn’t disappoint. They sell Kobe steaks for around $200! We didn’t go that far - I had a T-bone Steak and Doug ordered a Porterhouse Steak, medium rare. The steaks were pretty good, and the portions were HUGE, we had leftovers for the next day. I sort of regretted not getting the Filet Mignon, but that could be saved for our next visit.
