My Memorial Day Weekend

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Friday:
A nice dinner with family and friends.

Saturday:
Woke up early. Got ready for a drive to Marin County. I gotta admit, living in the Peninsula Bay Area, I somehow got the weird thought that San Francisco is like the final destination and nothing much else exists after you cross the Golden Gate Bridge. We’ve been to the beaches (Stinson Beach, Point Reyes), and my impression has always been of hills, and wilderness. How ignorant was I. We spent last Saturday just being tourists – had lunch at a small coffee shop, tried some Danish food, walked along downtown Sausalito, and then to Tiburon. I really liked how you could get the nice water views, of SF, and the small town atmosphere. If I could I would want to live somewhere in Marin County some day. We ended the day with some grocery shopping at SF Chinatown. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Rebecca Mom and Reb

Sunday:
Lazed. Did some grocery shopping, preparing for a BBQ with family and friends in the evening. Had chicken, pork chops, grilled peppers, corn, sweet potatoes, onions, sausages, shrimp – it was a feast!

Monday:
Lazed. Went to IKEA just for fun, do some window shopping.

So that’s how I spent my Memorial Day Weekend. Surprisingly I didn’t even opened the computer. Checking email via phone doesn’t count. hehe. I’m feeling a little homesick now. I miss Rebecca. Spending three whole days with her was great. She did have her tantrum times – one was in the car, she was really tired and wanted to sleep, but the seatbelt was a little tight and she was agitated. We had to stop midway to calm her down. Other than that, she was a blast! She had such great time looking at the pigeons, the boats, and experiencing all the new sights and sounds. It was pretty good, I must say.

Street View

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Google Maps just released a new feature – Street View. How does that work? You enter a location’s address, and click on “Street View” – An icon of a man will appear, and all you have to do is drag that little man to anywhere on the map that has a blue outline. A new window will pop-up where you will get to have a view of the street. I’m kind of skeptical of this since now the front of my house is visible to all.

New Google Maps feature

Friday, May 25th, 2007

So there is a new Google Maps feature called “Avoid Highways”. I tried it out by finding out the directions from my home to work. It worked, but not as well as it should. The road that they recommended is fine, except that its not bike-friendly.

Here are some suggestions I have for Google Maps:
1) Ability to avoid a particular street or highway.
2) Ability to find the optimum route given a particular speed limit.

In the meantime, this new feature can be really useful if you need to avoid jams on the freeway.

On another note, it seems that there is a new version of Google Maps for mobile as well, with GPS! But I wasn’t able to figure out if this is workable on my Nokia E62. It might just work only on the Blackberry 8800.

A La Carte and Art, MV

Sunday, May 20th, 2007
Reb and Doug Grandma and Reb

We were at the A La Carte and Art event at downtown Mountain View yesterday. Arts and Crafts, food, and beer, were the highlights of the day. I particularly liked two booths – one selling wooden sculptures of pelicans, storks and vultures, and another one selling figures made from metal knick knacks, like nuts, bolts, chains etc. I didn’t buy anything though, as I couldn’t make up my mind on what to get. Anyway, it was nice to see all the different interesting art and crafts sold. We did get hats for both Reb and Grandma, and I think they looked great.
